Introduction: Caleb Lagge

Hi I am Caleb Lagge and I am a junior studying computer engineering and mathematics. I chose to study these topics, because I like coding and math, specifically statistics. And I hope to one day work as a quant. While I enjoy my major for the most part, the primary problem is that it is very time consuming, so I do not often have a lot of free time. But the bright side is that I do enjoy working hard since the payoff is often very rewarding.

To tell a little more about myself, I am a pretty big gym rat, so my free time is often spent working out with my friends at the Huff. If you read my favorite place post you will find that this is also my favorite place. My other free time is normally spent watching sports with my roommates. My favorite teams being the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, OKC Thunder, and the Calgary Flames. Unfortunately, none of these teams have won championships in my lifetime, but I still have a somewhat foolish hope that next year will be their year.

My favorite movie would have to be Gladiator which is kind of ironic because I normally would prefer to watch a comedy or something much more lighthearted. However, what I like about Gladiator is that it has a good story with a nice mix of action, and while it is not a comedy there are some funny moments, at least in an ironic sense.

I am looking forward to taking this class, because it is not like any class I have taken. Instead of an engineering class where there are set rules and procedures one must take, this class gives its students the opportunity to be creative and go about the assignments in their own ways. To me this is fun as the blog posts I make are truly my own.

  1. Hey Caleb! Those topics definitely sound difficult, and I’m sure the workload can be pretty intense. I think there’s a really bright future for coding and statistics in a variety of fields, as computing and statistical analysis will only get more important. You mentioned that this class isn’t like any other class you’ve taken, and I’m also in a similar situation. I’ve primarily been in biology or chemistry classes, and I’m excited as well!

  2. I started out college as a math major also, Caleb! And at my school they recommended that math majors study German or Russian as their foreign language, so I took a Russian class...... and I was hooked! I spent the rest of my undergraduate years learning foreign languages and also the folklore and mythology I could read in those languages. And here I am a gazillion years later getting to share those stories with people every semester. Stories are easier to share than mathematics... and I like stories with mathematical twists. Here's a famous one from India: Tenalirama and the Chessboard ... and Gladiator is such a good story to keep in mind for this class: it has an epic sweep and a great hero, so maybe in this class you can imagine a hero story of your own to tell. I am looking forward to seeing what you will imagine!

  3. Hi Caleb, Computer Engineering sounds like a very interesting yet tedious field. I think coding is really cool, but I was never very good at it. I tried learning Python about 4 years ago, but only made it to the "Hello, world!" portion. It's like super basic, I know, but it is really cool that your majoring in something you like! I wish you luck in the rest of the semester!

  4. Hi Caleb! I've never been good at math, and I've dabbled in very basic programming, so I'm very impressed with your skills! It is very time consuming, but like you said, it is also very rewarding. I also love Gladiator - it's a great movie. I wish you well with your major, and hope you have a great semester!

  5. Hi Caleb!
So, I have to be honest and say that I have absolutely no idea what a quant is! I'll have to look into it! I am in the process of learning Python for a class right now, and I have to say I am really learning to respect those who know what they are doing on the software.
I also tend to go for comedic movies. I can't stand anything less than a bittersweet ending!

  6. Hey Caleb!

I am glad that you are majoring in something that you enjoy! I know that in some majors, there is more hard work to put in than others. I have never watched the Gladiator, but I have heard that it is supposed to be really good. I am excited about this class as well because this class is all writing on your own time. I have never liked writing but this class has changed my mind quite a bit. I like that I am able to be creative and have no specific set of instructions although it is nice sometimes.

  7. Hey Caleb! Computer engineering was something I always wanted to do! I was really interested in it for a while but went the chemistry route. I'm sure your major is really time consuming but at least you enjoy it! That's the big part of all of this- finding what you want to do for the rest of your life and I'm happy you did that! I hope you are successful in your future endeavors and enjoy the rest of your junior year! I'm excited to read your stories this semester!

  8. Hey Caleb! It’s nice to meet you! I also love the Huff. It was the first gym I ever felt comfortable in. I haven’t been since last March, unfortunately, because of the pandemic. I just don’t feel safe going back quite yet, but I’m glad you have a place to go to work out. Gladiator is a fun movie! I love anything that has to do with Roman or Greek history even if it’s just a flashy action movie. Good luck with your engineering and math classes!

  9. Hi Caleb! I commend you big time for enjoying numbers because I struggle so much with it. I had never heard of a quant or at least that term for it so it was nice to learn something new today, thank you! Just like you I had never experienced a class with such free will and openness until I took her other course last semester. I really hope you enjoy it! It is fun to have such control over a course because you can explore so many topics and options and ways to go with projects and stories. I hope you are doing well and have a great semester!

  10. Hi Caleb! I took a computers class in highschool that dealt with some coding and thought it was really interesting. I was never very good at it but would love to learn it better. My dad is computer program and I do not know how he does it. One of my favorite things to do also is to watch sports, my favorite things to watch is college football and basketball. I am hoping that March Madness gets to happen this year!

  11. Hello Caleb, I think your majoring is really interesting and I’m sure the payoff of all your hard work will be great. I also am a pretty big gym rat myself. On top on my passion for working out I also work at the gym, so the majority of my time is spent at the gym. I hope you have a good rest of the semester!

  12. Hi Caleb! Good for you that you like math and statistics so much, I have such a hard time with math! I am a psychology major and therefore have to take multiple statistics classes and let's just say it is not my favorite thing in the world. I also love to stay fit! I am more of a runner and love to run outside, but I do enjoy the occasional ab work out or leg day. I am taking this class for the same reason as you, because it is so different! Good luck to you this semester!

  13. Hi Caleb! I am also an engineering major, however I am Biomedical instead of Computer Science. I have learned a bit of programming and statistics throughout my four years here, and I can definitely see why someone would feel fulfilled by the payoff. That's cool that you like to workout! I did sports in high school and I work out occasionally in college, but not as much as I'd like to. I hope you are having a great semester!

  14. Hi Caleb! My husband is actually graduating with his masters in Computer Science with a math minor.I know this is a different from what you do since you are computer engineering, but it is similar! I don't know how you have time to go the gym, I barely have time to workout at home! I also love the OKC Thunder. I was so sad to see Adams go! Our little kiwi. I hope you have had a good semester so far!

  15. Hi Caleb! I think it is great how you enjoy math and statistics! I have found coding very cool but I never got into it. I also love going to the gym and I think it is extremely important especially during stressful times! I haven’t seen the movie Gladiator but it sound interesting in how it has a mix of action and comedy.

  17. Hello Caleb! It's awesome that you are doing computer engineering and mathematics! I'm a pilot and we definitely rely on people like you to code our electronics. I certainly don't have the training to do that haha. I also took notice that one of your favorite teams is the Vikings. I also watch them quite often. Most of my family lives just outside of Minneapolis. It's good to virtually meet you! Good luck with the rest of this semester as well as your future!

  18. HI Caleb,
I think it is very healthy that you spend a lot of time at the Huff. I think I maybe have been there once in the past four years as an OU student. Not my vibe, but someone's gotta go. I hope you've been enjoying the class so far, and am ready to read some of your stories!

  19. Hey Caleb,
I’m a senior computer science student, so not too far off from you in that regard. Pursuing both computer engineering and mathematics would definitely be a challenge. All of my friends in the CE department are always swamped with work for at least one of their classes. Even the smartest among them probably would have given up on math in order to make sure they can complete their CE work.

  20. Hi Caleb!
I also almost never watch action or thriller movies, or really movies in general, but Gladiator is one of my all-time favorite movies as well. I think it comes from spending so much time with my dad and twin brother. This class will definitely be a nice reprieve from your engineering and mathematics class because although it is still a lot of work, it's really fun!

  21. Hi Caleb! I am glad that you enjoy the major that you are pursuing, I think that is the most important thing to do! It is nice to hear that the Huff is your favorite place! I am glad that this class allows you to be creative! I hope you are having a good semester and have an amazing rest of the semester!

  22. Hi Caleb! I totally hear ya on not having a lot of free time. That has been the story of my life since I got to college, but mine has been a mixture of classes and working part time jobs. I'm about to graduate and sometimes I regret not having more time to have spent with friends, having had to turn plans down often because I had so much to do. But, at the same time I've made great friendships and treasure the experiences I've had.

  23. Hi Caleb,
I've always wondered what type of classes computer science students have to take in order to graduate. Obviously the word "science" is in the major, so I'm assuming there's a lot to do with some form of science, but I had no idea math was involved. I remember my first time watching Gladiator with me dad, it's his favorite too, and it is definitely up there on my list.

  24. Hi Caleb,
I completely understand your worry about a major that is super time-consuming. I am a bio pre-med major and I feel just the same. All of my friends have so much free time and it almost makes me feel like I'm missing out, but keep your head up and focus on your goals. I hope you have a safe and healthy rest of your semester.

  25. Hey Caleb!
It looks like you've got your hands full with scholastics! I have no idea how you have time for the gym! I wish I was a gym rat, I would be so much healthier if I went at least once a week! But sadly, I love my couch and netflix too much. I have never seen the Gladiator and never really wanted to watch it because it is my brother's favorite movie (we are so different in movie tastes). But the way you describe Gladiator has me intriqued!

  26. Hi Caleb! What is a quant? It's not a job I've every heard of, but then again I am studying pre-med and music, so we are in very different fields..... I'll have to look it up! I am also a big fan of comedy movies- I generally don't enjoy watching movies that actively leave me feeling more sad/melancholy/scared than I was before I started watching it.

  27. Hey Caleb! I confess, I haven't heard of a quant either. Regardless, statistics and computer engineering probably pair quite well together and should be really rewarding for you, even if they're a huge time commitment. I hope you haven't been forced to neglect your gym habits too terribly this semester, I can imagine that would be super frustrating. Good luck with finals and everything!
